Hyperosmolar non-ketotic diabetes.
Hyperosmolar non-ketotic crises occur chiefly in mild, maturity-onset diabetics, yet present a medical emergency carrying a high mortality. This may in part be due to a lack of awareness of the clinical presentation, and of the principles of treatment. Five cases are described, in all of which excessive consumption of Lucozade, a proprietary 'glucose' drink, played an important part in the deve...
متن کاملHyperosmolar Hyperglycemic Non Ketotic Coma and Rhabdomyolysis; An Uncommon Clinical Encounter
Rhabdomyolysis is usually attributed to trauma. However there is an association of rhabdomyolysis with hyperosmolar states. Recognition of this association will enable better management of the patient and reduce the burden on the care taker by preventing the onset of complications that can prove fatal. It is also important to realise that hyperosmolar coma can be the presenting complaint of a d...

Rhabdomyolysis is a rare but potentially fatal complication of hyperosmolar states. We report a case of severe hyperosmolar non-ketotic diabetic coma causing rhabdomyolysis in a young man. Despite very high levels of creatine kinase there was no detectable myoglobinuria. Creatine kinase estimation should be a standard investigation in all patients presenting with a hyperosmolar state.
متن کاملChorea-ballismus in acute non-ketotic hyperglycaemia.
Diabetic patients during hyperglycaemic crises may present a rare syndrome characterised by a typical triad: unilateral involuntary movements (hemichoreahemiballism), radiological contralateral striatal abnormality, and rapid resolution of symptoms after glycae - mic correction. This study reports a series of patients showing less usual aspects and also discusses the pathophysiology of this cli...
متن کاملNon-ketotic hyperglycaemic chorea: a SPECT study.
OBJECTIVE To study regional blood flow of the striatum in non-ketotic hyperglycaemic choreic patients. METHODS Brain SPECT was performed with intravenous injection of 20 mCi 99mTc hexamethylpropylene amineoxime in six non-ketotic hyperglycaemic choreic patients and 10 age matched patients with a similar level of hyperglycaemia without chorea as a control. The focal perfusion defects were anal...
